Vanesa Merulla Design :: MFA Thesis Statement

Objectlandia—The World We Live In
Objects are an integral part of our lives. No matter how different we are, we live in a world crowded with them. I believe people have powerful emotional affinities to objects they acquire, own, collect, use, or otherwise come in contact with in their lives.

In this thesis, my goal was to discover and use these emotional connections people have in order to engage them on a more personal, emotional level and show how this can be a powerful concept for other designers. My work uses strong central, abstracted objects in the foreground in tandem with photomontage images in the background to tap into the viewers emotional associations.

By using design that leverages the affinity people have, I hope people will realize that objects are more than just “something material that may be perceived by the senses” and that they play an important emotional role in their lives.
